In a weight-obsessed industry, often to the point of unhealthiness, Kaling is an inspirational role model. Frankly, it is her honesty that makes her appeal to her audience. Her character on her self-titled sitcom often makes self-aware wry comments about weight. She insists that she is petite, despite other male co-workers joking about her size. The simple fact, that Kaling is a major creative force behind the show highlights that she is aware of the obsession with looks in society. The fact, that she can make herself the end of a joke is a savvy way to get ahead of her critics.

Even in interviews, Kaling notes, “I always get asked, ‘Where do you get your confidence?’ I think people are well-meaning, but it’s pretty insulting. Because what it means to me is, ‘You, Mindy Kaling, have all the trappings of a very marginalized person. You’re not skinny, you’re not white, you’re a woman. Why on earth would you feel like you’re worth anything?” Kaling is the epitome of combining self-confidence with healthy body image. She advocates being healthy not only in body, but what most people forget: the mind.

Kaling’s exercise of choice: jogging. Although, don’t be prepared to be asked to come along as she often goes alone. She is not a loner; instead it is out of concern for those around her, as she calls herself an “avid slow jogger…I’m talking about an 11-minute mile.”

Her recent appearance on Conan will make you laugh. She jokes about having to create elaborate fantasies, about chasing the Nazi killer of her fake husband as ways to motivate her to exercise. This multi-talented actress makes exercising seem enjoyable.
